13 To 34 Year Olds Average 4 To 5 Other Activities While They Watch TV

Last week we shared a new study that revealed that 80 percent of viewers multitask while watching TV.  Today we’ve got an even more surprising multi-media multitasking statistic for you.  According to a new study from CTAM, television viewers aged 13 to 34 partake in 4 or 5 other activities on average while watching TV.  These activities range from texting to cooking, playing games, and emailing.  Read on to find out more.

According to Char Beales, president and CEO of the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM), “Many 13 to 34 year olds are multi-media multitaskers, but their social media activities vary depending on age group.”  The study breaks down the top 10 things that each age group (13-17, 18-24, and 25-34) typically does while watching TV.  The top activity, eating was pretty consistent across the board.  Top activities for 13 to 17 year olds also included playing games, texting and listening to music.  For 18 to 34 year olds the top activities were talking on the phone, surfing the web and cooking.

The study also took a look at what these viewers are doing on social networks while watching television.  They found that the most common social networking activities that viewers are partaking in while watching TV include looking up info online while watching TV shows (31%), discussing shows online (29%) and posting updates to Facebook and Tweeting (24%).  Viewers are also visiting network or show pages, commenting on discussions, following discussions and blogging.

CTAM also looked into some statistics about who influences the TV viewing of 13 to 34 year olds, what, when , where and how they’re watching.  Here’s a roundup of some of the more interesting findings:

  • Friends and family influence what 13 to 34 year olds watch more than anything (77%).  Other influential factors include previews (61%), browsing (56%) and ads (48%).
  • One quarter of 13-17 year olds, 24% of 18-24 year olds and 21% of 25-34 year olds said social networks are influential in what they watch.
  • Movies are the most popular genre among all the age groups with viewers (13-17 year olds – 56%, 18-24 year olds – 65%, 25-34 year olds – 68%).
