I’ve seen and commented on a lot of “smartphone” sales and web-share statistics. These are interesting. But, Gartner’s total worldwide mobile phone (“smart” or otherwise) sales really puts things in perspective.
Gartner Says Worldwide Mobile Device Sales Grew 13.8 Percent in Second Quarter of 2010, But Competition Drove Prices Down
They estimate that 325.6 million mobile phones were sold in the second quarter of 2010. Although Nokia has its share of business problems, they still were the biggest manufacturer of phones with sales of more than 111 million units. Apple sold 8.7 million iPhones during this period. This is a great sales figure. But, it only amounts to 2.7% of the total market of phones of all kinds (mostly feature phones). However, that is a healthy 14% of worldwide smartphone sales.
Garter estimtes that Android sales (aggregated across manufacturers) added up to 10.6 million units. This means it overtook the iPhone in worldwide sales. Android phone sales are now third behind Symbian (mostly Nokia) and Research in Motion (BlackBerry) in worldwide sales.
