85% Of Media Websites Now Use Online Video To Cover News

Is web video becoming the main format for online news?  According to a new survey by D S Simon it just may be.  According to the survey, 85 percent of online media websites are now using online video content to cover the news, jumping a third from last year.  Read on to learn more.

According to Douglas Simon, the D S Simon Web Influencers Survey, which garnered results based on an online survey delivered to over 1,000 media influencers in the fields of TV, radio, newspaper, magazine and web media properties, showed that “online media has now officially become a video programming network.”  33% more media outlets are using online video to cover news than they were a year ago, and the growth of online video is showing no signs of stopping.  Hear about the report form Doug Simon himself in the video below.

Of course, it should come as no surprise that online media sources are beefing up their online video presence when it comes to reporting the news.  Consumers these days have shorter and shorter attention spans and watching a short news video is often preferable to reading a long news article.  Not to mention the fact that online video adds an additional source for monetization on media websites, which is becoming more and more important according to the survey.

The DS Simon survey found that media websites are becoming more and more interested in monetizing their sites, with 80 percent indicating that they are currently selling advertising.  Video is a great channel for monetization, with pre- and post-roll ads and more.

84 percent of survey respondents also indicated that they are using third-party video in addition to online video created in-house.  This is up three percent from last year.  Radio stations, magazines and newspapers lead the pack when it comes to using externally produced video, which shouldn’t come as a surprise as these are traditionally print and audio mediums.  Television stations have more of their own content to broadcast online, so their percentage of externally produced content is lower, at 63 percent.

Douglas Simon, CEO of D S Simon, says, “The 2011 Web Influencers Survey illustrates the shift from textual or static communications to video communications by media websites.  It appears that almost all forms of media have transformed themselves into online television networks.  It appears this trend will continue to accelerate given the response to our question of whether web media companies planned to increase their use of video footage.  Nearly four-fifths of respondents indicated they would use more or much more video in 2011 than they did in 2010.”
