ABC News’ Nightline Turns 30

ABCNewsNightlineTimeline.jpg
ABC News debuted a new show 30 years ago today, spawned from America Held Hostage, which had been temporarily airing at 11:30 p.m. ET to provide extended coverage of the hostage crisis in Iran. And Nightline, which was born March 24, 1980, is still alive and well.

The show survived despite the unenviable task of battling The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson for viewers, and it turned then-unknown host Ted Koppel into a media icon.

And after its 2005 relaunch with anchors Terry Moran, Cynthia McFadden, and Martin Bashir, as well as correspondents John Donvan and Vicki Mabrey, Nightline is still going strong.

As part of the show’s 30th-anniversary celebration, ABCNews.com is featuring an interactive timeline looking back at 30 years of Nightline.
