The Peoria Local of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists incorporated Twitter into its rally supporting employees of the Illinois city’s WEEK/WHOI-TV.

The union encouraged supporters of the station’s photographers, producers, reporters, anchors, meteorologists, and multimedia journalists to rally against employers Silver Point and Granite Broadcasting by going to a special page, Support Quality Journalism in Central Illinois, and tweeting with the hashtag #savelocalnews.

Talks between the news team’s AFTRA employees and the station’s owners began in November but stalled Feb. 18, after which AFTRA members began working without a contract. Silver Point and Granite announced that they will impose new terms Saturday, to which AFTRA responded:

The corporation’s move to “impose” its proposals on the WEEK/WHOI-TV news team would subject the employees to a number of substandard working conditions that threatens to damage the station’s ability to deliver local news to the central Illinois community.

The union held a Day of Reckoning rally Friday at United Auto Workers Local 974, located next to the station’s headquarters.
