hurricane sandy, airbnb, rentals, social networksAirbnb joined today other tech companies looking to do good and get some PR at the same time, by offering special discounts for those affected by Hurricane Sandy, offering to waive its fees on rentals in affected areas.

Airbnb is based in San Francisco but has a robust set of listings in affected areas: 20,000, according to the company.

Hosts and guests benefit from fee-free rentals between now and November 7 in New York, Providence, New Haven and Atlantic City. Or, for those looking to be displaced in style, the Hamptons.

The company has also posted a list of discounted and affordable rentals in those areas.

“Shell, an Airbnb host in Brooklyn, is offering her five guest rooms to stranded travelers and locals – for free. She provides an example of how we can all help,” Airbnb said in the blog post announcing the offer.
