Alcohol Brands on Twitter Now Have Age Verification

twitter age verificationAge screening is coming to Twitter – at least for alcohol brands like Budweiser and Heineken. The new changes were announced yesterday evening on Twitter’s blog:

One of the biggest challenges for alcohol brands is how they connect with an age-appropriate audience. To address this on Twitter, we’re rolling out an improvement to the age-screening experience on Twitter.com, iOS, and Android devices. Starting today, alcohol brands can safely grow their of-age network of Twitter followers in a way that’s simpler than before.

Of course, that’s not to actually prevent anyone under the age of 21 from following these brands, it’s easy to lie about your age, especially on the internet. However, it might be a deterrent for too lazy to lie teenagers or anyone who doesn’t like filling out online forms, even if they are fairly short.

Twitter first introduced age verification last year, but the company claims this new change is an improvement from the previous system. One thing is certain, age verification for online products and services needs vast improvement or re-thinking in order to actually be effective.
