Amazon Expands Fan Fiction Platform With New Partners

Amazon Publishing has formed new licensing partnerships for Kindle Worlds with comic book publisher Valiant Entertainment, as well as the authors Hugh HoweyBarry Eisler, Blake Crouch and Neal Stephenson.

Amazon launched Kindle Worlds, it’s fan fiction publishing platform last month. Through the platform, fans can write, publish and sell works of fan fiction based on a range of original stories and characters. Amazon launched with licenses for Gossip GirlPretty Little Liars, and Vampire Diaries. These new partnerships bring about licenses for the Worlds of Valiant superhero comic book series including: Bloodshot, X-O ManowarArcher & ArmstrongHarbinger, and Shadowman, as well as Hugh Howey’s Silo Saga, Barry Eisler’s John Rain novels, Blake Crouch’s Wayward Pines Series, and the Foreworld Saga by Neal Stephenson.

Writers that use the platform can earn a 35% royalty rate from net revenues for works at least 10,000 words. Amazon Publishing is also piloting a new program for  short works which run between 5,000 and 10,000 words. These short stories, which are typically priced less than $1, Amazon will pay the royalties for the World’s rights holder and pay authors a digital royalty of 20%.
