Americans Watched Over 10 Billion Online Video Ads In May

Holy advertising, Batman!  According to the latest statistics from comScore’s US Online Video Rankings, Americans are watching more online video ads than ever.  Last month the U.S. Internet audience watched over 10 billion online video ads, up from 9.4 billion in April.

The 10 billion-plus ads (10.076 billion to be exact) accounted for a whopping 4.517 million minutes of ads.  To give you an idea of how much this is, it would take a single viewer over eight and a half years of straight watching to get through all of those ads!

As you can see from the chart below, Hulu accounted for the most online video ad views with over 1.6 billion ads at a total of 725 million minutes, followed by Google Sites (i.e. YouTube) with 1.3 billion ads at a total of 143 million minutes.

Joshua Cohen of Tubefilter points out that, “What’s even more impressive about hose 10.076 billion online video ads services is the overall number of Americans who watched online videos dipped slightly from April to May, as did the total number of online videos consumed.”

Other notable findings from comScore’s May 2012 report include the following:

  • 8.4 percent of U.S. Internet users viewed online video
  • The average online content video was 6.5 minutes, while the average video ad was 0.4 minutes
  • 21.6 percent of all videos viewed were ads
  • 1.9 percent of all minutes spent watching online video were spent watching ads
