America’s Fastest Texters Compete for Cash in New York City

Finally, the ability to type quickly with two thumbs is paying off, or rather it could pay off for one of the 11 finalists at the 6th annual LG U.S. National Texting Competition. Today at noon, the  players will face off in New York City’s Times Square for a shot at $50,000.

Cartoon Network and anti-bullying specialist Rosalind Wiseman have also teamed up for a special “Text for the Cause” segment of the competition as part of the former’s Stop Bullying: Speak Up™ campaign.

Reigning champion Austin Wiersche of Rhinelander, WI will return to defend his title. Since May, the electronics company has sponsored weekly Facebook tournaments to find the fastest and most accurate texters from all over the country. To get to the finals, Wiersche and the other contestants have passed rigorous text-copying challenges based on speed and accuracy, including capitalization and spelling. (Sarcasm and terseness apparently did not count against them.)

Now the moment has arrived. “Our finalists are in the locker room,” wrote LG Texter reps on the competition’s Facebook page on Tuesday. “They’re doing thumb push-ups, getting ready for tomorrow’s bleacher-thumping Times Square event!”

If you’d like to thump on those bleachers, the event is open to the public. Everyone else can watch for updates on the LG Texter Facebook page.
