Android Malware Up 700% Since January 2010?

Pop quiz! When were these two news subject lines written? If you said, “This week,” you would be half right. I wrote the first of the two in May of this year. While the second one comes from Electronista earlier this week.

Android Malware Seeing Huge Increases: Malware Generated Status Updates Soon?

McAfee: Android malware surges 76%, iPhone untouched

Earlier reports noted that Android malware quadrupled between June 2010 and January 2011. McAfee’s 76% increase is for the second quarter of 2011. The earlier report was generated by Juniper Networks and BullGuard. Assuming the two reports are measuring malware in a similar way, malware in the 18 month period between January 2010 and June 2011 is up over 700%. Apple’s iOS (iPhone/iPad), on the other hand, has no malware.

Back in may, I wrote Google’s Android is, unfortunately, beginning to resemble Microsoft’s Windows platform in terms of both significant marketshare as well as a high profile target for malware developers. It looks like this is still true.
