AOL has quietly launched a new lifestreaming service called Buddy Updates. It’s a pretty simple service actually which is similar to what others are already doing and offering. The only difference is the fact that Buddy Updates is part of the AIM, AOL’s instant messaging service, network. So, it makes use of your network of AIM buddies.
Buddy Updates lets you view and share your online activities with your AIM buddies. By online activities we mean, updates from your accounts in online services including:
- RSS Feeds
- Xanga
- MySpace
- YouTube
- Livejournal
- Tumbler
- Flickr
- Webshots
- Del.icio.us
- Mixx
- StumbleUpon
- Blip.TV
- Viddler
Don’t ask me why Facebook was not included in the services covered by AOL. Because just like you, we’re also asking the same question.
Anyway, aside from letting you share your online activities with your network of friends online, you can also see these updates through your AIM account if you already have one. This is one big advantage of Buddy Updates over the other Lifestreaming service. Even at startup, they already have a pretty good amount of userbase.
If you want to check it out and you already have an AIM, MY AOL, or Mobile AOL account, all you have to do is sign in using any of those account. If you don’t have an AOL account yet, you would need to create one to use Buddy Updates.
Overall, Buddy Updates is a pretty simple online service that would either turn you off because of its simplicity, or get you excited because you don’t pretty much have to do too a lot of things to enjoy the lifestreaming service.
