AOL Trademark Filings, Domain Buy Point to Social Media Platform

About two weeks ago AOL filed five applications with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) in order to enhance the company’s online local and community based service offerings. On the same day of the filing, the company purchased the domain name called NVIBE.

What does this mean for AOL?

Most likely, AOL will take another stab at creating a social networking platform. Unfortunately, AOL wasn’t too successful the last time it tried this venture, purchasing Bebo for $850 million dollars, and well…it wasn’t a happy ending. But, you have to give AOL credit for preservering.

It appears that AOL is approaching the social media concept differently this time by starting from scratch and going for a more localize scheme of operation. The trademarks make it clear that AOL could gradually integrate as a localized social media platform.

Based on a report from Business Insider, NVIBE will:

-Provide information and news in the field of local business

-”…. Provide information, news, and commentary in the field of travel via computer and communications networks”

-”Provide neighborhood and community information in the fields of education, entertainment, local events ……Provide information about community and neighborhood livability”

-•”Provide a website that enables users to connect with people in a particular neighborhood or city… customized based on the known or estimated geographical location of users”

-Provide “online social networking services; online local and community social networking services”

AOL has already invested a lot into Patch, a community-specific news and information platform that provides local coverage for individual towns and communities, and it looks like they’re prepared to invest more.
