Apes, Zombies, Sparks and Goo — Zynga Acquires Four Gaming Companies

Despite recent stock market woes, Zynga is pushing forward with the acquisition of four social and mobile gaming companies. Reuters reports that the buyouts, which have been in the works for the last few months, were confirmed on Wednesday by Zynga mobile executive David Ko, who did not disclose the amount of the sale.

The most recent – and largest – of the four companies appears to be Page 44 Studios, which has been around since 1998. Based in San Fransisco, Page 44 Studios has worked with other video game publishers on popular games like Disney’s “High School Musical 3: Senior Year DANCE!” for the Xbox 360, Wii, PC, and PlayStation 2 consoles, as well as the physics puzzle game World of Goo for Apple’s iOS platform.

In September Zynga acquired Gamedoctors, a company based in Bielefeld, Germany that created the iPhone and iPad game “Zombie Smash.”

New York-based Astro Ape Studios was acquired in August. This company makes mobile social games like “Office Heroes,” “Dessert Heroes” and “Monsterz’ Revenge,” which are similar games to those that Zynga already makes, like Café World and Farmville.

HipLogic, based in San Fransisco and acquired in August, is not so much a gaming company as it is a content delivery platform. In September 2010, the company introduced *Spark, which compiled data from across users’ social networks into one homescreen interface on their smartphones.

In May 2011, VentureBeat noted that the company had acquired 14 game makers in the last 12 months, gearing up for its IPO in December 2011.

Ko didn’t elaborate to Reuters on the direction the company hopes to take with these recent acquisitions, but it looks like Zynga is expanding its game portfolio and its reach on mobile devices at the same time.
