If you’re a regular reader here at Social Times then you know that I usually write about online video. What you may not know is that, in addition to being obsessed with online video, I’m also mad crazy about baseball (Go Red Sox!), so I’m super excited to tell you about MLB PrePlay, the official prediction game of Major League Baseball.
MLB PrePlay, currently available on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, lets you make predictions for the upcoming play while you’re watching baseball on TV, live as the game progresses. The app lets you predict everything from an at-bat to a pitching change, game winners, pitchers’ lines, starters’ fastest pitches, inning length, runs-per-inning and more.
As you watch a game, each time a player steps into the batter’s box, you’ll be presented with the option to predict whether the player will hit, get an out or walk. If they hit, which base will they make it to; if they are out will it be on a strike out, a ground ball, fly ball, etc.?
I was pretty psyched to see they used Dustin Pedroia in their example screenshot, but OUT? Come on! Everyone knows Pedroia hits home runs!
MLB PrePlay also lets you challenge your friends and others to see how your prediction skills stack up on a game-by-game, week-by-week or season-long basis.
A spokesperson for PrePlay told me that, “Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM) granted PrePlay a license for the use of official Major League Baseball marks and access to the Gameday API – the service that power’s MLBAM’s top grossing apps like MLB At Bat and Beat the Streak.”
The app is available for free in the app store. Will you be downloading it? If you check it out, be sure to let us know what you think!
