Apple is reportedly selling untethered iPhones – yes, we do mean without a contract – at all of its US retail stores. The move follows news last week that, as of March 26, AT&T is allowing its current customers to buy one without signing a new two-year contract.
Of course, these no-contract iPhones, available as of yesterday at both Apple Stores and AT&T retail outlets, aren’t subsidized, so you have to be willing to shell out some serious cash – $599 for the 8GB model and $699 for the 16GB one. That’s quite a hefty jump from the $199/$299 you pay with a contract.
According to Fortune, although AT&T is only selling the untethered iPhones to existing customers, and limiting them to a single device, Apple is apparently willing to sell the contract-free iPhone to anyone in the US who wants to buy one.
Don’t forget, though, that the iPhone still only works over AT&T’s network, so although it’s possible to get an iPhone without a contract now, you’re still tethered to the network. Well, unless you know a good hacker…
