Facebook, Twitter, Email & More in Android OS 3.1 Tablet Status Update Window

One of the first things I noticed when I started using the Motorola Droid in late 2009 was that its pull-down notices at the top of the display provided a lot more information than what I saw on an iPhone. The push-up notices from the bottom of Android tablet displays are able to provide even more information because of the bigger screen size. I’ve been playing with a WiFi-only Motorola Xoom running Android OS 3.1 (Honeycomb) for the past few days and have learned to appreciate the rich status information provided in the push-up status windows on the bottom right of the display. Like the comparison between the iPhone and Android phones, I’ve come to appreciate the rich status information available in a push-up window on Android tablets.

Honeycomb’s status bar (when not pushed up) shows icons of apps with new status information, the time of day, WiFi signal strength and battery charge. Status notices from running apps such as email, Facebook, and Twitter clients pop-up with summary information.

When the status bar is pushed up, you will see full calendar information (day of week, date, time) and quick access to Airplane mode, WiFi, Auto-rotate screen option, brightness, Notifications and Settings. Gmail and Facebook both provide rich information about incoming email and Facebook responses. Twitter apps like TweetComb can alert you with an audio clip as well as text information. This feature makes it very fast and easy to see status update information in a single window and decide what to act on first.

Note: Motorola’s PR firm provided me with a short-term use of a WiFi-only Motorola Xoom for review purposes.
