AV Software Pioneer John McAfee Releases Offbeat Video Bashing Company’s Latest Products

Apparently security pioneer John McAfee has missed the limelight since he returned to the United States after fleeing into Guatamala to avoid being questioned for murder in Belize.

Yesterday, he published to YouTube a video that purports to tell viewers how to un-install the anti-viral software made by the company that bears his name, which he left 15 years ago. But the video is actually a bizarre skit that features McAfee snorting bath salts while having sex with one woman while several others look on.

As for how to uninstall the software? McAfee points a gun at the camera before blowing up his PC. The murder for which the Belizean authorities sought to question McAfee was committed with a gun.

“15 years ago I had some beautiful software and they took it over, I don’t know what they did,” he says in the video after reading a graphic series of user complaints about the anti-viral software the company that bears his name now puts out.

Technorati are outraged by the video. Jason Calacanis, of Launch, remarked, “If I ever do something like this please shoot me.”

Still, there is some irony in the fact that the video offers a kind of parody of the promotional videos tech companies produce for new products, which almost infallibly include either the trappings of money (sushi restaurants are almost infallibly the type of business searched for in local search products) or geek-meets-girl narratives. Zynga somewhat notoriously showed an avatar having sex in one of its games during a press event last year.

But it’s not at all clear that McAfee is in control of that narrative. Perhaps the best response would be a new reality TV show called “Tech Magnates Gone Crazy.”
