The strangest app of the week award goes to STD Triage – an app that helps users identify STDs anonymously. To get an expert opinion, use your iPhone camera to snap a picture of the questionable rash or skin lesions. A panel of experts will analyze the photo within 24 hours to help you determine whether you should see a doctor. The app is free to download, but each photo analysis will cost $9.99 as an in-app purchase.
Founder, Dr. Alexander Börve explains:
A typical case is when an embarrassed man married five years with only his wife as a partner notices a genital rash. He contacts us at 11 am on a Sunday morning. He sends us a photo anonymously, and within four hours he has an answer–’it look like genital herpes, which can have been a latent virus from years ago, and could be triggered now by many factors including stress. You should see a doctor for confirmation and treatment.
Since it can take weeks or month to see a dermatologist, this is a good alternative for under insured young adults. San Francisco’s 7×7 magazine reports “that up to one in two sexually active young people in this country may contract an STD by the age of 25.”
