Bing Brings ‘Knowledge Graph’-Like Entries to Its Search Results

bing, search engines, social search, social networks, social networkingBing has a giant to slay if it wants to become truly competitive in the search arena, and the giant, Google, has been arming itself with hundreds of thousands of Knowledge Graph entires that give users a quick fix of information on commonly searched people or places right on the search results page.

Today, Bing moved to make its own ‘Snapshot’ column, introduced in May, more competitive by rolling out entries for famous people and landmarks.

The feature previously included hotels and restaurants, and offered users the option to make reservations directly from the search results page.

When users search for famous places or people, they will see an entry in the center column of the search results page that provides the basic information about the queried entity. For instance, a search for Seattle’s Space Needle shows how tall the structure is, when it opened and who designed it.

“Now when you search for a famous person, celebrity or place, we will present relevant facts about that person in the center part of the screen so you can quickly find what you’re looking for without having to click through to another site or page,” Microsoft said in its announcement.

According to the company, famous people and places constitute the most common search queries.

In May, the company also launched a social sidebar that provides social search results in a separate listing from those that come from the company’s search algorithm.

Since then, Bing’s market share has been inching up, from 15.4 percent in May to 16.0 percent in October, the last month for which comScore statistics are available.
