Business Week has some very interesting details about the soon-to-launch BlackBerry app store in this article…
Here’s a couple of items that caught my eye:
- RIM will take a 20% cut of the cost of an app. This compares well to the 30% Apple takes.
- The minimum app price is set at $2.99. Apple iPhone apps can (and often are) be priced as low as 99 cents.
Will this be enough to entice developers to build BlackBerry apps?
And, the real question is: When RIM opens their app store, will anyone come and buy anything? And, more importantly, who will do the buying? Unlike the nearly pure-consumer-play iPhone, a significant number of BlackBerry units are owned by enterprise entities (businesses and governments). So, the user of the device is not the owner and, presumably, may not be allowed to purchase and install apps on-demand.
