cameostars She might not want to go to the bar with you and your friends this Saturday night, but now Carmen Electra can post to you and your friends’ Facebook walls just as if you had friended her. Cameo Stars is a new Facebook application designed to bring celebrity cameos – like those surprise guest appearances on your favorite sitcoms – to your Facebook wall. You can have Carmen post something to your wall where she pops out of a birthday cake or get Tony Romo to poke and hand off a football to your friends with this slick app.

With four notable celebrities in the mix for their public beta launch and the promise of hundreds more through 2011, Cameo Stars is poised to become a hit with avid Facebook users. Its launch yesterday includes cameos by Carmen Electra and football stars Tony Romo, Drew Brees and Reggie Bush. Says Carmen of her miniaturized virtual self:

“I had a blast creating my cameo star. It is such a clever concept and an innovative way for me to virtually socialize daily with millions of people and to be a fun addition to the important events in their lives.”

Cameo Stars uses a “freemium” business model that offers users several free celebrity actions such as pokes and messages to the troops. In order to get more specialized content like happy birthdays and congratulatory messages, users have to pay using Facebook Credits. Thus far, the only available premium cameos all cost 30 Facebook Credits, or $3 USD, a piece to send to a friend. All of the cameos are high definition videos, and appear directly in the selected friend’s news feed and on their wall.

Founder and CEO of Cameo Stars, Daren Hornig, discusses the benefits of Cameo Stars:

“By combining the intimacy of social media, the richness of HD video and the authenticity of viral content, we have created a way for these stars to take part in the everyday moments that are traditionally shared only through consumers’ immediate social networks. And it enables celebrity talent to participate in the multi-billion dollar virtual goods market.”

Watch for more celebs from the movies, music and sports worlds to begin jumping on Cameo Star’s services, as they look for ways to engage with fans using new media and maybe make some money off of virtual goods in the process.
