6 Key Attributes To Demand From Your Sobile Analytics Provider

Analytics are a means to an end – not an end themselves. Mobile app publishers need to be able to answer the “how, why and what” questions from the data they collect. Ask yourself: How is my app doing? Why is it performing well or poorly in certain areas? And, what can my business do to fix any issues and build on our strengths to improve the user experience? Analytics can and should be employed to address these questions and to optimize user engagement and monetize mobile apps. More after the jump. continued…

Food For Thought: Where Would We Be Today Without Social Media?

Do you ever think about where we would be today if it wasn’t for social networks? What would be going on in the world if we didn’t have Twitter and Facebook? Where would get our workday entertainment if not for YouTube? A conversation I had yesterday about how Facebook and Twitter have changed the world got me thinking, and I thought I would share some of my thoughts with you, our readers, to see what other people think.

Has Music Become Social Enough? Sean Parker Thinks So

Listening to Sean Parker’s advice is a bit like trying to take life lessons from your parents seriously. Sure, they have experience and probably know what they’re talking about, but you always have the sneaking suspicion that their viewpoint may not be entirely relevant anymore. Just the same, let’s talk about the Napster founder’s recent decree that social music has finally reached its proper level of, umm, social-ness.

Only 1 in 500 Branded Online Videos Break 500,000 Views

If you’ve been thinking of trying to take your brand viral with a creative, original and hilarious online video campaign, the odds aren’t exactly in your favor. Statistics show that only 1 in 500 online videos produced by brands bring in more than 500,000 views, and the videos that break 1 million are even more rare. The time has come to face the facts: creating a viral video is a lot harder than it looks.

On The Curious Power Of UFO & Bigfoot Videos To Go Viral

Do you believe in aliens and UFOs? How about Bigfoot? If you are like most, you’ll probably answer “no,” but if the question was whether you would watch a video of a UFO or Bigfoot on YouTube, your answer may be different. UFO and Bigfoot—two of the world’s most mysterious phenomena—are laughed at by most, yet are among the most viral topics on YouTube. Upload a video of alien craft or Sasquatch and you are almost guaranteed your fifteen minutes of YouTube fame.

Apple Patent Suggests their Cloud Will be the Fluffiest of All

In a recent article on the status of the could music battle between Amazon, Google and Apple, I tendered my opinion that victory wouldn’t be based on chronological order, but on a litany of factors. I also touched on the fact that Apple has a storied history of entering the market later than competitors with a superior product and almost immediately leaving said competitors to fight for a very distant second place. Well I’m not one who revels in saying ‘I told you so’ (that’s an absolute lie, I love it) but a recently unearthed patent application strongly suggests that Apple’s cloud-based music service could be a game changer.

What Makes A Video “Viral”?

“Viral video” is one of those buzz words that gets thrown around a lot but nobody is really sure what it means. I mean, what exactly constitutes a viral video? How many views does it need to be considered “viral”? How quickly does it have to rise in viewership? In this post we’ll deal with a number of factors that relate to whether or not a video is viral, including viewership, buzz, parody and longevity.

Intel’s AppUp – Is It Too Late to Succeed?

At the recent AppUp event in San Francisco I had a chance to checkout the Intel AppUp store at their booth. Most of you probably have never heard of AppUp, but it was launched in September of 2010 and currently has a selection of over 3,500 apps. That app selection seems almost laughable compared to 134k+ apps on the Android store and 121+ apps on the iTunes store, but Intel seems to be optimistic (not like they have a choice not to) that they will get some traction in 2011.

Currently their Windows store is up in running, and some blockbuster mobile titles such as Angry Birds are available for purchase. In fact AppUp is the only way to play Angry Birds on your PC. Unfortunately there are no numbers available with regards to the size of App Up’s user base, so it is still a high risk choice for developers unless they already have an existing title which they’d like to port over to AppUp, which supports C, C++, .net, Java & Unity. Intel tries to assist developers with porting their games to AppUp by working with their preferred porting providers, as well as offering to cover porting costs for certain developers.

Intel is heavily betting on the rise of touch screen netbooks, laptops and monitors that are being released, such as the Lenovo IdeaPad s10-3t (netbook). The s10-3t is basically a hybrid between a tablet and a laptop. It comes with a rotatable screen that you can flip over and turn into a tablet, then flip back over and open to use its built in keyboard as you would on any normal netbook/laptop. So for those of us who would like a portable touch screen productivity tool, the new wave of netbooks may be the best choice.

Until Intel releases their numbers for AppUp and provides some serious incentives for developers to come on board, I predict that it will be very difficult for them to gain significant traction.

Not Just Domains — Today’s Startups Must Snap Up Social Profiles

The internet game has changed a lot since the first website hit the web in 1991. Just as text websites have expanded into fully-fledged interactive websites with an eye on mobile, the need for businesses to register a brand-relevant domain name has expanded to include a need for appropriate social profile names on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks.

While brands have more or less caught on to this need and can be found snapping up social profile handlers on every ‘the next Facebook’ site flooding the social media market, I’ve found myself needing to constantly remind startups to make this a conception priority, immediately after settling on a business name and registering a domain name.

Why are domain names important?

Along with the obvious branding benefits of a strong and simple domain name, there are also significant search engine optimization (SMO) and general web presence benefits a strong, simple and relevant domain name can bring to enterprise.

Why are social profile names important?

For the same dual benefits domain names offer – branding and web presence, which are achieved with a good Facebook page name, a good Twitter profile name and others to a lesser extent.

If you Google search ‘social times’, you will notice the first few results are from socialtimes.com – an outstanding domain name for a business called ‘Social Times’.

As you scroll down that first page of Google results, you will notice ‘Social Times on Twitter’ – which has the very handy handler twitter.com/socialtimes or @socialtimes. You will further notice ‘Social Times on Facebook’ on that same first page of Google results – which has the conveniently consistent Facebook page URL facebook.com/socialtimes.

Clearly, Social Times is achieving a more holistic web presence for their brand because they own a consistent domain name, Twitter page name and Facebook page name.

Startups must make this a priority alongside domain name registration to achieve the same benefits.

Opentracker introduced a new cloud-driven reporting system, using technology developed by Facebook that measures and analyzes millions of visitors and page views from minute to minute. In essence, this creates the ability to think and react in real time. Decisions can be made based on what is happening, while it happens. This new service utilizes cloud-processing models used by Twitter, Google, and Amazon.
