Social Media Adoption and Fortune 500 Companies — Have They Reached their Peak?

Fortune Magazine annually tracks America’s largest corporations due to their influence in the business world. For this study, Academics from Center For Marketing Research Dartmouth examined the social media activity, specifically blogging, of various organizations, concluding that the biggest companies have slowed down their social media efforts and appear to be hitting a plateau. More after the jump. continued…

Why You Need Charts and Pictures in Corporate Blog Posts [VIDEO]

When it comes to corporate blogs, looks do make a difference. Now, it isn’t unusual to see companies sweat out every design and layout detail. This is sensible – you want to address brand considerations, deliver a great end-user experience and generally not be ugly. It’s not unusual, however to spend the bulk of your design time on the blog’s theme and not the content. Bring design into your post, and the results are more compelling.

7 Tips for Marketing Your Content

I’m knee-deep in launching a new blog. This will be my tenth (non-personal) blog launch/re-launch in six years. Each time I do it, I seem to forget (and re-learn) the pain that’s involved. Getting a blog off the ground is far from easy, and keeping it alive is even harder. Of the 10, five are alive and well, if in different hands, two are dead and two should be if they aren’t. For the tenth, it’s still too early to tell, but everything looks better than it has with my other launches.

New Blog Looks to Increase Interest in Google Music

Not too long ago everyone was pretty excited about the debut of Google Music: then we got Music Beta by Google and, while it wasn’t terrible, it also wasn’t much of a pay-off for years of patience. If you’re not paying much attention to the service’s continued evolution it seems you’re not alone. So, to combat flagging interest, Google has launched Magnifier, a music blog/Music Beta hype machine and provider of some complementary tunes.

Magnifier seems, first and foremost, to be an attempt at putting Google Music back into the minds of a somewhat disinterested public — but it’s also looking to make itself a source of general music information by providing artist and music reviews, history and more. It ties in Google+ accounts as well so those who have transferred their loyalty to Google’s social network may be more likely to get on board with its use.

Google recruited Tim Quirk (whose credits include being the former VP of Rhapsody) to help design Magnifier and his innovative thinking shows. The most interesting aspect of the blog is its integration of Music Beta, something that very well could help reignite the service’s popularity. Magnifier lets you read about, say, its “Song of the Day” then click a button that adds it to your library for (free) listening. Users must have an account to take advantage of this, of course, so if Magnifier catches on we could very well see Music Beta increasing its traffic in the near future.

Google Magnifier only recently launched so there isn’t a ton of content to look through but, if you’re interested in seeing what’s up with the blog then take a click to see it for yourself.

A 21st Century Odyssey: “My Quest for Yummy Banh Mi”

When I was in high school a friend of mine introduced me to one block of our city — the extremely little Little Vietnam — that redefined how we spent our lunchtime. While everyone else was off huffing McDonalds we were sampling what was, in that time and place, a little known cuisine. As time went on, more and more of our friends caught on to it and soon most everyone was hip to these new, interesting flavours. King of the discoveries was banh mi (what we called the “Vietnamese Sub”).

As Thu Nguyen and Michael Gordon’s current Kickstarter campaign, My Quest for Yummy Banh Mi, demonstrates, we’re not the only ones that have been entranced by the unassuming sandwich.

Banh mi is simple food and, in many ways, encapsulates the history and culture of Vietnam. It’s a blend of French and local cooking that is a staple of national street food, home cooking and restaurants. Nguyen and Gordon (the former having developed foodie blog YouCook.ca) are seeking to catalog the roots of the beloved sandwich by tracing local ingredients, regional interpretations and more through a trip to the heart of banh mi country — Vietnam.

My Quest for Yummy Banh Mi sees Nguyen documenting her banh mi experiences throughout the country and laying out the groundwork for a cook/travel book that compiles the photos, recipes and writings made during this time.

Bringing banh mi secrets to the masses is a bit expensive though. That’s why Nguyen and Gordon are looking to raise a bit of cash to help offset travel costs involved in the project. Rewards for doing so include copies of the finished book (in PDF and/or hard copy), recipe cards, personalized “thank you” post cards and much more.

Check out My Quest for Yummy Banh Mi on Kickstarter, Nguyen’s specialized YouCook page, or Facebook. The project will be funded on Tuesday, May 31 at 9.46pm EST (if the $2,500 goal is met) so, if you’re donating, make sure to do so ASAP.

How Do You Measure Corporate Blogging Success?

Traffic is important – there’s no doubt about it. But, you’ll need to do more than bring bodies to your corporate blog in order to generate ROI. In fact, it even takes more than bringing the right bodies. After all, getting your brand or message in front of a person in your target market doesn’t instantly translate to revenue. Further, your corporate blog isn’t a success unless it’s contributing (as directly as possible) to your top line.

Meme Alert — ‘Chicks with Steve Bucemeyes’ Spells It That Way For A Reason

Depending on the type of person you are, I know what you’re thinking – nay, praying. You’re either hoping that the title ‘Chicks with Steve Bucemeyes’ isn’t a misspelling and it’s something – anything other than girls with Steve Buscemi’s eyes slapped on them, or you’re hoping the missing ‘s’ is just a typo, because that kind of disturbing tomfoolery amuses you. Well, score one for the latter group. And if you’re prone to bad dreams, you may want to avoid hitting the link.

Is the New York Times Tumblr Actual Journalism?

The headlines say that The New York Times is now on Tumblr, but truthfully it is not the New York Times on the popular social networking platform. It’s T Magazine, a subsidy online magazine of the NY Times. Which bears an interesting point: What is so special about T Magazine other than its association with the New York Times? Why say New York Times is on Tumblr when in fact it’s T Magazine.

The Beastie Boys Make Some Noise on Tumblr

We have been hearing how Tumblr has been growing like crazy, but now the social networking platform is getting noticed even more with The Beastie Boys new song, “Make Some Noise.” The popular rock band introduced their new song from their next album by playing it on Tumblr. Beastie Boy Mike D posted on the site about using Tumblr and saying that it wasn’t really part of the plan, but since followers are out there, “we wanted to let you hear it here first, or maybe second. Enjoy.”

[Update] Jay-Z Creates a New Lifestyle Site… But It’s Not a Tumblr!

[Update: While our sources reported that this site was in fact powered by Tumblr, a little digging by our readers has revealed that this is incorrect. We've updated the article and sorry for the confusion on this one.]

Jay-Z (a.k.a. Shawn Corey Carter) added editorial director to his resume of talents by creating a life style site called Life + Times. We are familiar with the rapper’s clothing line and for being a savvy businessman. So, It’s about time Jay-Z started a web site. Don’t you think?
