Orkut Launches for iPhone — Will It Encourage Growth?

Orkut has been sitting on the sidelines ever since Google Plus showed up on the product roadmap at Google, and it looks like it’s going to stay that way. With Google+ up to a reported 40 million monthly active users, it’s only the start for the emerging social network. That said, Orkut is still pushing forward, with strength in India and Brazil and 66 million active users as of October 2011. The question is whether Google is doing anything to help these two products get along or not — and whether they’re taking opportunities to synergize (yes, I used that word).

Judging by the looks of the recent release of the Orkut app for iPhone, it looks like these two products are going to stay on their own tracks, at least for now.

Is Warner Bros. Working on a Rival for Instagram?

It looks like Warner Brothers could be building another Instagram. According to Fusible.com, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. filed patents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in December for variations on the name Out My Window to build what appears to be a photo-sharing social network.

And the winner is… Instagram. The powerful photo application allows people to easily give their photos a visual punch, with filters ranging from cracked black & white to high contrast super-model. The images are resized into a square sahape, and typically a vignette is applied to the edges. The results are fantastic, and Apple has supported the app and the team by selecting it as their favorite application of 2011.

Google+ Updates Android Application

Google has updated their Google+ Android app including — wait, it wasn’t there before? — Search. Other features added are giving “+1s” to photos and comments and better photo and video upload support. I’ve found the Google+ Android application to be an easy-to-use app, with the big clear icons and pastel colors, and am glad to see Google focusing on keeping it up to date.

I usually leave the default apps in-position on their respective home pages “just because.” This list does not indicate how “important” an app is. It says more about how frequently they are accessed on a daily basis.

Revisiting Using a QR Code & SlideShare to Share Presentations on Smartphones

The tip provided a solution to a problem I had to solve myself: How do I share a slide presentation with an audience when a projector is not available? My solution was to upload the slides to SlideShare’s free web sharing service and use a Google QR code to let the audience quickly find and see the presentation. So, how did all this work out?

Journal or diary writing was once a private and somewhat laborious task. Blogging changed the nature of the activity from a private one to a public one and made the process of word smithing faster. Micro-blogging services like Tumblr and Twitter simplified the process further by either limiting the character count or encouraging sharing found content instead of creating new content. Path, Inc.’s app (also named Path) takes this shift away from manual content creation to an automatic process of indicating where you go, what you see and what music you listen to.
