The Hyp Replacement: Multimedia Storytelling On Twitter, Tumblr, Blogspot and YouTube

Social media has changed the face of storytelling. Characters, real and fictional, tell their stories in 140 characters or less on Twitter; filmmakers have found storytelling outlets in YouTube and Vimeo; stories are told on blogs, through all sorts of media from text to photos to news clippings, on Facebook walls and beyond. E.A Marciano, a Brooklyn-based writer, has turned to these channels to tell the story of four Brooklynites in The Hyp Replacement, an experimental literary project told through Twitter, Tumblr, Blogspot and YouTube. I had the opportunity to speak with Marciano to find out more.

Parenting & Social Media Part 1 — 5 Tips to Keep Your Children Safe

As a social media professional and as parent of a 12 year old girl and 10 year old boy I have a different perspective on the use of social media by my kids than the average parent. I am all too knowledgeable on the pluses of my kids using it and of the risks and dangers.

I know the difference between hype and reality when it comes to my kids’ safety. As with all things, sometimes it’s best that kids learn things on their own and at other times we need protect them. We don’t leave dangerous drugs on the kitchen table when toddlers are around and so we need to approach social media the same way. I’ve prepare my top Five list of things as parents we can do to mitigate any dangers of our kids using social media properties.

How Schools Are Using Social Media [Infographic]

84% of colleges and universities now use Twitter to reach out to their students — that’s up from 0% in 2008-2009. With LinkedIn, it went from 0% to 47% in the last two years. There’s no doubt that social media is affecting the way schools reach out to students, and you can bet that students today have a different relationship with their institution than they had just a few years ago.

Social Games and Gamification: What’s the Difference?

This is a guest post by Keith Smith, CEO and Co-Founder of BigDoor

Often the terms “social games” and “gamification” are used interchangeably, but in actuality they’re very different animals. While it’s true that gamification borrows its game mechanics from social gaming, there are many real-world situations where it makes more sense to apply gamification instead of building an entire game. First, let’s take a look at a definition of each concept:

Social games are built on a social media platform like Facebook or Google+. Casual in nature, they can be picked up or dropped at a moment’s notice and are designed to engage the player’s social network of friends. Games like CityVille, Hidden Chronicles, and Words with Friends are popular examples.

continued…

The Facebook Platform Roadmap in 2012
