As Users Choose Social Media over SMS Texts, Mobile Operators Lose Billions

I remember when I first visited Japan in 1997. Our group of North Americans were shocked at how even teenage girls had their own cell phones, complete with dangling bells and ornaments. What surprised us more was their use of “SMS” messaging to send chat messages to one another. After I’d returned from the trip, I did some research and found that the phenomenon was also spreading all over Europe — Brits in particular sent millions of text messages per year.

It would be a few more years before we had it over on our continent, but once it hit, it hit big. That’s what it’s a bit of a changing of the guard to see that social media messaging (Facebook, Twitter, etc) is costing mobile operators billions of dollars in SMS revenue.

Microsoft’s Clash With Google Over Privacy Settings May Be Part of a Larger Problem

Google’s policies are once again under scrutiny as Microsoft and others have caught the company circumventing users’ privacy settings to track them with cookies. But Google representatives have pointed out that they are not alone.

The Internet: You Can Run, But You Can’t Hide [Podcast]

Surveillance used to be reserved for catching criminals (and celebrities in bathing suits). Now, thanks to location-based social media tools, our lives have become an Internet reality show that’s supposedly produced for our own entertainment. Today on the Morning Media Menu podcast, I joined GalleyCat editor Jason Boog to figure out if we should be flattered or completely freaked out.

Geosocial Networking – What’s In It for the User?

When, where and how much to share are big issues when it comes to social media, especially now that geolocation and search have gone social. But the panelists at a Social Media Week event on Tuesday night agreed that the rewards of connecting online far outweigh the potential for sharing too much information.

Just How Personal Is Geosocial Networking Going To Get?

When Google plus Your World came out, many critics were underwhelmed. Although there were privacy concerns about personalized search results, the site’s social media elements were actually conservative considering the arsenal of tools available for finding people online. At a Social Media Week panel on Tuesday, pioneers in geosocial networking predicted a more sophisticated – and slightly creepy – future.
