Geosocial Networking – What’s In It for the User?

When, where and how much to share are big issues when it comes to social media, especially now that geolocation and search have gone social. But the panelists at a Social Media Week event on Tuesday night agreed that the rewards of connecting online far outweigh the potential for sharing too much information.

Revisiting Using a QR Code & SlideShare to Share Presentations on Smartphones

I provided a tip here in August that drew a fair bit of attention and commentary. The tip provided a solution to a problem I had to solve myself: How do I share a slide presentation with an audience when a projector is not available? My solution was to upload the slides to SlideShare’s free web sharing service and use a Google QR code to let the audience quickly find and see the presentation. So, how did all this work out?

Participate in a Google+ Hangout Without an Android or iPhone

Google+’s greatest feature is Hangouts. It lets you have a multi-person video chat with up to 10 people. It is also very easy to use and, best of all, is free to use. But, what if do not have a iPhone, iPad or Android phone with a front facing camera? This is no longer a big problem because Google just added…

Path 2 for Android & iPhone Automates Journaling Your Life

Journal or diary writing was once a private and somewhat laborious task. Blogging changed the nature of the activity from a private one to a public one and made the process of word smithing faster. Micro-blogging services like Tumblr and Twitter simplified the process further by either limiting the character count or encouraging sharing found content instead of creating new content. Path, Inc.’s app (also named Path) takes this shift away from manual content creation to an automatic process of indicating where you go, what you see and what music you listen to.

“Save to foursquare” Button Sends Place & Location Info From the Web to Your Phone

Part of the trick to managing an enormous amount of information is getting the data moved from screen to screen (from notebook to phone or tablet and vice versa). If you see a “Save to foursquare” button, you can now save information about the place to your Foursquare account. If the Foursquare Radar option is turned on, your phone will buzz to let you know you are near something you though was interesting enough to use the “Save to” button.

Foursquare Teams with Scoutmob to Offer Mobile Deals in 13 U.S. Cities

Foursquare says deals are often 50 to 100% off. That’s quite a deal.

AVG: 56% of U.S. Kids 10-13 Years Old Access Social Networks from Mobile Phones

While Twitter does not have a minimum age requirement, Facebook sets it at 13 and Google+ is 18. In general the minimum age of entry for social networks is 13 or older. Yet, anti-virus firm AVG surveyed 4000 parents (in USA, Canada, Germany, France, UK, Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand and Japan) with children between 10 and 13 years old and learned some surprising things.

Weathermob for iPhone: Share What the Weather Looks Like in Your Area

So, why not organize this weather information sharing? I took a look at the free Weddar for iPhone and Android earlier this year and came away unimpressed because, as I wrote earlier, While a crowd sourced social weather app seems like a good idea, its dependence on the crowd instead of conventional weather sensors means that its usefulness is greater or lesser depending on how many people participate. From what I can see, there are now fewer U.S. data points available compared to this past April when I tried the iPhone version.
That number is probably well over 200 million now. Instagram’s photo filters help make ordinary photos interesting and really good photos spectacular. But, is your Instagram-ed filtered photo good enough to hang on your wall on a canvas? That’s a question that Canvaspop would like to help you answer.

Oink for iPhone: 100K+ Oinked Items in 3 Weeks Makes it a Lot More Interesting

Oink for iPhone rates indidvidual things in places rather than the the entire place itself. It probably got equal amounts of attention from its somewhat unique take on social ratings as it did from its famous company founder, Kevin Rose of Digg fame. It was interesting but not very useful when I took a look at it earlier this month. However, TechCrunch’s report prompted me to take another look.

Hitpad for iPad 2.0 Update Adds Social News Curation to a Lickable Interface

Flipboard, the popular and useful social news curation app for the iPad, inspired a number of competitors in that app space. Back in April of this year, I took a look at one of these news aggregation apps and wrote… Hitpad for iPad: Lickable Graphical News Interface – Needs Social News Feed Curation. I went to note that: While Hitpad looks better than and is more readable than Taptu, its news curation is fixed. Linking to your Twitter and/or Facebook account is just for sharing information. It does not use your own sources for news curation..
