People on the Street Don’t Know This Cheezy 90′s Headset Isn’t Google Glass [Video]

Comedian and filmmaker Mark Malkoff took to the streets of New York to find out what the average person thought of Google Glass, the wearable computers that not many people have had the pleasure of trying on. What these bystanders didn’t know was that the headset Malkoff was wearing wasn’t Google Glass; it was actually a gaming console from the 90s called an R-Zone.

The clunky headset made by Tiger Electronics in 1995 is about as attractive as an old pair of braces in the days before Invisalign. It doesn’t give directions as well as Google Maps, either. Though the video was only uploaded yesterday, more than 19,000 people have already watched it on Mashable’s channel, where viewers can’t believe the crazy reactions.

Held at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands, the stage was packed with live performances from the internet’s best and brightest, including Aerosmith, Carly Rae Jepsen, Sky Blu, Eric Benet, Blush, and PSY.

Study: Social Recommendations Trump Search When it Comes to Mobile Video Discovery [INFOGRAPHIC]

A survey released today by social video community company Telly found that 67 percent (52 million) of 78 million mobile device owners find videos through social recommendations as compared with 41 percent (32 million) who discover them through search engines.

The survey, which interviewed 2,000 adults and was conducted by Harris Interactive, defined social recommendations as coming from “social networks, texts or emails.”

It breaks down social results this way:

• 35 million view mobile videos after viewing recommendations on social networks ;
• 28 million check out videos after receiving emails from friends and family; and
• 23 million watch videos recommended through texts or MMS.

“We’re experiencing a new dawn in digital video. Mobile users are looking for an easy, low-effort way to quickly find great content while on the go. Social recommendations are a natural fit to quickly guide consumers to great content, especially in a mobile environment where it’s difficult to search,” said Telly CEO Mo Al Adham. “We believe this means there’s an enormous opportunity to create easier discovery technologies and services for mobile video.”

Other survey results show that consumption of mobile video on Android is nearing the momentum of iOS. While 58 percent of iOS users view videos on mobile devices, 55 percent of Android users do. In addition, 36 percent use iOS devices, 46 percent Android, 12 percent Windows, and 3 percent Blackberry.

Survey participants revealed several mobile video consumption hurdles:
• Costs for cell-phone plans and data costs;
• Figuring out how to find quality mobile videos; and
• Slow internet connection.

When it comes to age, 48 percent of households with children are more likely to view mobile videos than those without. In addition, the survey found that people ages 18-44 are three times more likely to watch mobile videos than people over the age of 45.

In terms of geography, 37 percent of mobile video watchers live in the South, 21 percent in the Midwest, 20 percent in the West, and 22 percent in the Northeast.

Parents Share More Videos of Kids Than Cats, Survey Finds [Infographic]

No wonder Grumpy Cat is so grumpy: parents are now sharing more videos of their kids than of their cats, according to a survey of parents by Magisto.com and PlayScience global research firm. In fact, parents are three times more likely to shoot and share videos of their kids (27 percent) than they are of their pets (9 percent).

Shooting a video does not always guarantee that it will be shared, the research showed. Overall, 60 percent of parents said they shoot at least three videos per month, while less than half (44 percent) say they share at least three videos per month. But 53 percent of parents said they shoot videos of their kids just so they can share them with others and 88 percent of parents will share them either way.

See which devices and platforms parents prefer, and the subtle differences between moms and dads, in the infographic below.

What Netflix Originals Reveal About Social Media’s Newest Category of Fans: ‘Binge’ Viewers

People who watch entire seasons of television in one sitting are willing to share where they are in a series, but are careful of revealing spoilers, according to an analysis by social media research firm Fizziology.

These binge viewers, as they’re called, showed very different behaviors for “House of Cards” than they are showing now for the upcoming season of “Arrested Development”: two Netflix original series that viewers can watch at their own pace.

Fizziology president and co-creator Ben Carlson recalled that during the plot-driven “House of Cards,” where “no one knew where anyone else was,” viewers were more likely to “report how far along they were in the series, versus how they felt about it,” he said. And many talked about binge-watching multiple episodes.

Comedies like “Arrested Development” may or many not have enough of an overarching plot to suck viewers into watching one episode after the next — that remains to be seen — but Carlson notes that the series will kick off with something that “House of Cards” didn’t already have: “a rich ran base from when they were on the air,” he said.

Netflix decided to revive the cancelled series after it gained momentum through its streaming service and DVD rentals. As a result, the volume of social media posts about the upcoming fourth season of “Arrested Development” was seven times higher than that of the all-new “House of Cards,” Fizziology found.

Here’s a breakdown of the organic conversations, rather than sponsored content, about “Arrested Development”:

Twitter Volume (Past Week): 43,338

Overall Sentiment
Positive: 47%
Neutral: 53%
(There was almost no negative conversation at this point in time).

Gender Breakdown (Of Positive Conversation)
Male: 59%
Female: 41%

Age Breakdown (Of Positive Conversation)
14-18: 5%
19-24: 40%
25-29: 27%
30-34: 22%

The analysts noted that more than half (51%) of the mentions were about the recently released trailer, and most of the viewers were self-identified fans of the show. They added, “There is almost no organic conversation about the banana stands popping up across the world for promotion/marketing or from people who became recently aware/new fans of the show.”

Friday Morning Laughs: Don’t Be a Glasshole

Happy Friday, SocialTimes readers! Google has been all up in our faces this week with the new Google glasses, which have replaced the pager belt clip as the fashion statement of The Future. They look pretty cool (charcoal, right?), but before we get too carried away with our wardrobe planning, let’s take a look at some of this week’s viral videos. If you squint, you can see other ways the internet is creeping into our daily lives: into our bedrooms, our bathrooms, and even classic works of literature.

This video is just starting to pick up steam, but since Google’s I/O conference has dominated the internet all week, we’re posting it as a public service announcement to not let your geeky eyewear go to your head. Don’t be a glasshole, people! Stay glassy.

Fitness Video Goes Viral When Viewers Spot a Man on the Toilet in the Background

Video viewers found new meaning in the word “squat” when they noticed a man sitting on the toilet in the background of a workout video on YouTube.

The clip starts with an actress demonstrating a squat front raise with a piece of fitness equipment. “I want you to really feel this move,” the fitness instructor says to the viewers. When the camera pans across the living room to follow the instructor as she pushes back with her legs and raises her arms, part of the nearby bathroom makes it into the frame. Inside, some guy really is feeling the move while sitting on the toilet with his pants around his ankles. Talk about a photo bomb.

YouTube viewers were quick to point out the error in the comments. On reddit, viewers are still arguing about whether the toilet cameo was just an accident or if it was staged. So far, the creators at the Daily Hiit are keeping the lid closed on this one.

Published on May 9, the video took off after it was uploaded to reddit on May 10 — it received 3,142 views from redditmedia.com and 9,573 views from reddit.com, according to YouTube’s statistics — and has continued to grow from there. The video, titled “Burnout Challenge – HiitLean #11,” has 58,090 views as of the time of this post.

Screampix to Terrorize YouTube with the First Paid Horror Channel

YouTube’s first paid subscription channel to focus exclusively on the horror genre, SCREAMPIX must be written in all caps because the collection of full-length movies the channel contains is so terrifying that it has to be kept behind a paywall for safety.

The channel is one example of what paid channels can offer viewers that a free channel can’t, as these movies will run in their entirety with no commercials and the channel itself contains a good browsing tool with reviews, descriptions, and suggestions of movies to watch, some of which can be purchased separately for download.

Just as Netflix invents highly specific categories like “dark mind game thrillers” and “scary suspenseful supernatural movies,” SCREAMPIX will curate subgenres of horror films like “Students Making Bad Decisions,” “Zombiepalooza,” “Tiny Little Killers,” “This Doesn’t Smell Very Good,” and “Women on a Rampage.”

In addition to curating the best videos, head of programming Ray Cannella will interview horror directors and creators and take viewers behind the scenes of their favorite movies. Canella joins the channel from SyFy and Chiller Channel’s original programming team.

“I make no excuse for my love of horror movies,” said Cannella in a statement. “I can’t wait to share my passion about the qualities, history and relevance of the movies. But even more, I’m LITERALLY DYING to interact with horror fans around the world!”

Fans will also be able to curate the videos with user-suggested “shelves.”

“We are grateful to YouTube for the opportunity to provide SCREAMPIX with a platform that extends to a billion unique users per month,” said co-founder Kearie Peak, whose past credits include Electric Entertainment and Solar Pictures, where she was co-CEO and head of production.

The basic package is $2.99 per month, with a current base of 100 movies and new ones added every week. Peak added, “We are in the earliest stages of our launch and we look forward to executing our ambitious growth plans.”

UPDATE: Added Screampix co-founder Daniel March, “We intend to feature horror films from nearly every time period and in every genre. What we ultimately want to do is provide our subscribers with the movies they want to see. So if ‘70s supernatural horror films are what you want to see, just let us know!”

Is It Harder For Women To Succeed On YouTube?

If you take a look at a list of the most-subscribed YouTube channels you’ll notice a trend: nearly all of them are created by, or predominantly feature, men. Currently at youtube.com/charts, a list of “Popular Channels” features smosh, RayWilliamJohnson, nigahiga, PewDiePie, HolaSoyGerman, the male-centric machinima and OneDirectionVEVO, while the RihannaVEVO channel is the only nod the video site gives to content starring a female. Why is this? Does the YouTube audience simply prefer men? Are men creating better content than women? Is it more difficult for girls and women to gain acceptance from viewers than boys and men?

Earlier this year, British YouTuber Benjamin Cook, aka ninebrassmonkeys, explored these questions in “Girls On YouTube,” an episode of his weekly documentary-style YouTube series, ”Becoming YouTube.” The episode took an unfiltered look at what some of YouTube’s biggest names, including Hank Green, Charlie McDonnell, Carrie Hope Fletcher, Jack and Dean, Lex Croucher, and Emma Blackery, think about “girls on YouTube.”

“Becoming YouTube: Girls On YouTube” sparked some controversy–mainly because it ignored the fact that there are hugely successful female YouTubers, such as Grace Helbig, iJustine, Hannah Hart and Jenna Marbles, the second most-subscribed-to creator on YouTube with over 8 million subscribers and 1.1 billion video views. It also left out the voices of some of YouTube’s more seasoned and successful female stars, many of whom actually feel empowered by their YouTube fans and tout the advantages of being women on the video site.

We’ll hear from a couple of these more optimistic female YouTubers shortly, but first – here’s a look at some of the biggest issues brought to light in Cook’s ‘Girls On YouTube’ video.

The demographics are in the guys’ favor.

In “Girls On YouTube,” YouTuber Lex Croucher explains, “It’s about an 80-20 split of girls to boys watching [vlogs on] YouTube and girls, especially 15 year old girls, like to watch boys.”

While YouTube’s demographic breakdown for advertisers and Quantcast demographics show a negligible difference between the number of male and female viewers on the video site, the consensus among the YouTubers in Cook’s video seems to be that a majority of viewers of their vlog-style content are female. Thirty-year old Cook reports, “82.4 percent of my audience is female…and just over half is aged 13 to 17.” He says, “This split is typical of a male vlogger’s audience demographic.”

YouTuber’s Jack and Dean attribute this to the fact that girls are simply more prone to the whole fan-girl lifestyle. “Girls obsess over stuff,” says Dean. Jack adds, “It’s been proven for ages. Look at the Beatles, and now you’ve got One Direction.” Fair or not, teen girls’ inclination toward fandom, paired with their desire to look at cute boys, is more advantageous to male YouTubers than to female YouTubers.

Emma Blackery says, “Some people just go for looks – they want to see a cute boy on the screen.” It’s different for female creators, explains Blackery. Girls aren’t just watching because you’re nice to look at. “They’re not looking at how attractive you are – they’re seeing if you make good content, if you’re relatable, if you’re funny.”

Society teaches girls that looks matter.

If you turn on your television or open a magazine, odds are you’ll be bombarded with beautiful women. For our entire lives, we’ve been conditioned to believe that if we are thin and if we are beautiful, people will like us more and we’ll be more successful.

YouTuber Carrie Hope Fletcher says, “In the media in general, there’s definitely more pressure on girls to kind of look a certain way, whereas there’s less pressure on the boys. It’s more nerve-wracking for girls to be on camera because they might not think that they look right for it.”

It doesn’t help that many male and female YouTubers alike are bombarded with trolling comments about their looks–called fat or ugly, even if they aren’t. Blackery says, “Girls do get judged a lot more than guys, I think,” which can be hard to overcome, but overcoming it and sticking with making videos can ultimately lead to a successful YouTube career. ”I got really upset, my first dislike I think I cried in a corner somewhere, but now I’ll get any kind of comments that are rude and I’m just like ‘Yeah I’m used to hearing that’ and I’ll say something back to them…I stand up for myself now.” Blackery now has over 217,000 subscribers.

The flip side.

Cook’s look at ‘Girls On YouTube’, while interesting, does shed a rather pessimistic light on the world of female YouTube creators so I decided to do a little research of my own. I spoke with a couple of seasoned female YouTubers to get their take on what it’s like being a woman on YouTube.

Issa Rae, creator and star of comedic web series, ‘The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl’ and ‘roomieloverfriends’, who also recently joined forces with Shonda Rhimes on a new comedic television series, tells me,”I think there are way more opportunities and advantages for women on YouTube. It really provides a unique opportunity to find your own audience, big or small, for whatever it is you do.”

When asked whether she could recall any instances in which she felt she was treated unfairly or differently on YouTube because she was female, Issa Rae told me, “I can’t think of anything offhand, because I don’t like to think that way. If I’m the only minority in a situation (the only woman or the only person of color), I try to use that to my advantage as much as possible. I try to think of the advantages of being the only female in a certain situation, as opposed to the disadvantages.”

Cassandra Bankson is a model that has made a name for herself on YouTube by helping those who, like herself, suffer from cystic acne. She has put herself out there in a big way, revealing her biggest insecurity to the world in an effort to help others, and says that, “There are certainly individuals who are a bit more open about their negative (and sometimes hurtful) opinions.”

Bankson does point out that, “Speaking personally as a woman, and just from what I have observed, it seems women are slightly more critical and ‘comparing’ than males. Occasionally I wonder if my audience was male if there would be the same competition.” But overall, she says, “I’m so thankful to have a place where I can share my experiences and still receive such amazing feedback and support.” Bankson says she doesn’t believe that being a woman has made things harder for her. She says of her channel, Diamondsandheels14, “My experience has been overwhelmingly positive. I try to focus not only on beauty, hair, acne and makeup, but on inner beauty, confidence, and self-worth.”

What do you think? Why do you think there are more popular male YouTubers than female YouTubers? Is it harder for women to succeed on YouTube? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

A Handy Guide for Marketing a Small Business on YouTube

YouTube newbies should check out The Small Business Guide to YouTube, a helpful microsite that shows a step-by-step guide for getting started with YouTube marketing. Created by Simply Business, this one-page destination covers everything from creating good content to preventing legal issues.

With so many instructions to read through on YouTube’s help board, this site speeds up the process by briefly summarizing all the FAQs on one page and then making detailed answers easy to find. The page is designed as a flow chart that takes you through a series of “yes” or “no” questions that lead to the answers, which are outlined in a slide show presentation. It starts with the basics — “Do you know how to create a YouTube account?” — and moves into more complicated territory, like the various monetization options and how to measure your success in YouTube analytics. Every time you answer “no,” you’ll see a new slide that’s filled with checklists, videos, and links to articles to fill you in on what you don’t already know. (And who doesn’t love saying no?)

Friday Morning Laughs – Hero Charles Ramsey Songified, Walking Dead Lip Reading, & More Videos

Happy Friday, SocialTimes readers!
Normally, zombies don’t talk much; they just stumble around and go, “err…grr.” In this bad lip reading of AMC’s zombie apocalypse thriller, the zombies surprise their victims with revelations like, “Guess what? I just ate a hot dog!”

In this car commercial, Star Trek actor Zachary Quinto races old-school trekkie Leonard Nimoy to the golf course in his new Audi. Nimoy’s Mercedes is not up to the challenge, but the former Mr. Spok wins for reprising his 1967 performance of “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins.”

YouTube Kicks Off Paid Channel Program with Full Episodes of ‘Fraggle Rock’

After months of rumors, YouTube has rolled out 53 paid channels on the video-sharing site. One highlight is the Jim Henson Family TV channel, which includes full episodes of “Fraggle Rock.”

Announced today, the pilot program will launch with a small group of partners on YouTube. Subscription fees will begin at $0.99 per month after a 14-day free trial, the company said. Some channels also offer annual subscriptions at a discount.

So far, the full lineup includes kid-friendly channels like National Geographic Kids and niche offerings like workout videos from iAmplify and matches from the Ultimate Fighting Championship. There are number of Spanish-language channels as well.

The videos are accessible through computers, phones, tablets, and television sets.

“Just as the partner program empowered creators to take their channels to the next level, we look forward to seeing how this great community of creators moves ahead with a new way to reach the fan communities that made their channels a hit,” wrote the YouTube team in a blog post. “You’ll be hearing more from us, and them, as we get creator and user feedback and build out this exciting offering.”

How Social Media Helped a Dad Who Lost His Savings to ‘Evil Carnies’

A cautionary tale became a story of compassion when social media users rallied to help a man who lost his life savings trying to win an X-Box for his kids in a carnival game and walked away with nothing but a stuffed banana with dreadlocks as a prize.

After local news station WBZ-TV picked up the story, editors at CollegeHumor offered to buy the banana from Henry Gribbohm for $2,600 (the full amount that was lost) and give the man an X-Box Kinect if readers would generate 30,000 Facebook Likes for their post about the story.

Not everyone who read the man’s tale felt sorry for him, pointing out that $2,600 is a lot of money to wager on a gaming console that only costs a couple hundred dollars in stores. In addition, after complaining that the game was rigged, Gribbohm said the New Hampshire game operator had already given him back $600.

Others who were less judgmental helped the CollegeHumor team exceed its goal. In the end, the campaign generated more than 37,000 Likes.

“I’d say some people got behind behind it because they wanted to help the guy out,” CollegeHumor editor-in-chief Streeter Seidell told SocialTimes. ”They felt bad for him and saw a chance to give the story a happy ending. Then I think there were probably a sizable chunk of people who just wanted to see if we’d do it. Would we really spend $2,600 on a stuffed rasta banana? They have their answer.”

Over the weekend, the publication sent Seidell to meet Gribbohm in person and exchange the banana for the X-Box and the cash. The moment is captured in the video above.

The grateful father says he plans to donate some of the money to the Boston Run and will use the rest to set up a college fund for his three kids. As for the banana, “I’m going to miss him,” Gribbohm said.”We’ve definitely become close.”

YouTube Reportedly Launching Subscription-Based Channels This Week

As early as this week, around 50 YouTube channels will live behind a subscription paywall, according to the Financial Times.

“Cable and satellite channels, which traditionally rely on a dual revenue stream model, are eyeing YouTube’s subscription service to generate revenue from older shows and new programming, according to another person familiar with the project,” wrote Matthew Garrahan and Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson in their report for the Financial Times.

So far, the names of the channels have not been revealed.

AdAge had reported in January that YouTube was reaching out to existing partners to create new paid channels in an effort to compete with traditional television. These were expected to launch this spring.

This report estimated that the channels would cost between $1 and $5 per month or be available on a pay-per-view basis for things like live events; Financial Times said today that subscription packages would start at $1.99 per month.

<del>YouTube did not immediately respond to our request for comment, but has told the Financial Times that although the company is looking into a subscription platform, it currently has nothing to announce.

</del>

Update: The YouTube spokesperson who responded to our query repeated what they had previously told Financial Times: “We have nothing to announce at this time, but we’re looking into creating a subscription platform that could bring even more great content to YouTube for our users to enjoy and provide our partners with another vehicle to generate revenue from their content, beyond the rental and ad-supported models we offer.”
