topstalker Watch out People, Us Weekly, In Touch… there’s a new competitor in the gossip world, and it’s all of us. Top Stalker, a new social network for the celeb-obsessed, gives the power to snap and share photos of our most beloved and despised celebrities to anyone with a camera phone. Saw Ashton at the bar? Got a glimpse of Angelina with the kids at the park? Now you can share your celebrity sightings with friends, family, and a whole network of fellow star-hunters.

Top Stalker claims that it will ” turn… the Paparazzi business on its head with a website that will soon offer more authentic celebrity photos than can be found anywhere else online, in magazines, or on television.” That’s a bold claim, but not too far-fetched – with the thousands upon thousands of camera phones in the hands of Hollywood fans around the globe, there’s already a large repository of “unofficial” paparazzi snaps out there. If Top Stalker can gather all of these on its website and encourage users to keep coming back and uploading more, it will likely soon host more photos of scandalously-clad starlets than any current magazine (except, maybe, for Playboy).

Users are able to upload their celeb sightings and tag them with a date, location and the name of the celeb in question. They can also browse the current selection of proto-paparazzi sightings on Top Stalker, updated hourly. And Top Stalker even allows users to watch live photo streams of their favorite celebrities along with dates and maps – just in case they want to take the stalking up a notch.

Each uploaded photo is open to user comments, so that gossip is allowed to bloom to its fullest. Those users who are most active – snapping the most photos, dishing the most gossip – are awarded for being “top stalkers” by badges and awards. And just so this status doesn’t go unnoticed, users can also share their photos, gossip and awards with their friends on Facebook, Twitter and other networks.

To give iPhone users even more excuses to stalk their favorite celebrities, Top Stalker has created an iPhone app that allows easy browsing and commenting, as well as a seamless upload feature to tap into those random on-the-street sightings that fans may capture with their iPhone.

And while this might sound like a huge competitor to the traditional gossip media, Top Stalker, at least for now, is letting any other publication grab its photos free-of-charge. So maybe People and co. and breathe a sigh of relief, and start grabbing fan-made, fan-endorsed photos for their glossy next issues.
