Center for Public Integrity Adopts Digital Strategy

The Center for Public Integrity is refocusing on digital, announcing that it will aim to generate more accountability reporting, new audiences, and earned revenues in the digital marketplace, as well as revamping its Web site, expanding its newsroom, and launching a new digital delivery system.

Two grants totaling $1.95 million from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation were credited with the strategy shift.

The news follows an announcement earlier this month that the Huffington Post Investigative Fund will become part of the Center for Public Integrity.

The Center for Public Integrity promised more details within the next 60 days.

Executive director William E. Buzenberg said:

As the news industry contracts, readers have stated clearly that they still want serious, nonpartisan public-interest journalism. And the nonprofit funding world wants to see new business strategies that take philanthropic capital and grow it through earned revenue. Our plan is to deliver both. We expect this new direction will ensure that, one day, every dollar donated by one of our generous supporters can produce $2 worth of journalism.

Founder Charles Lewis said:

The only thing constant is change, and the need for change is now. I anticipate in the next two years the Center’s new strategy will make it the largest news organization of its kind globally.

And board of directors chair Marianne Szegedy-Maszak added:

The Center’s leadership laid out a very thorough and thoughtful plan, one that makes logical business and journalistic sense. This is a great management team, and I’m confident in the outcome.
