Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa Breaks Records As Most-Funded Film In Kickstarter History

“Can you imagine the unique world of Charlie Kaufman realized in stop motion without the influence of the Hollywood studio system?  Just a true uncorrupted artistic endeavor?”  Sounds pretty amazing, right?  And thanks to a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, it’s going to become a reality.

Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa, with the help of Community’s Dan Harmon and Dino Stamatopoulos’ “Starburns Industries, Inc.”, raised $406,237 on Kickstarter, becoming the most funded film in Kickstarter history.

According to a press release, “Anomalisa was originally written by Kaufman under the pen name Francis Fregoli and produced as a play with two performances at Royce Hall in Los Angeles, in September of 2005.”  The film version will be a stop motion masterpiece, with Dan Harmon and Dino Stamatopoulos as executive producers and Duke Johnson as director.  Kaufman will also be overseeing the project.

The original goal for the Kickstarter campaign was $200,000 but they said that if they raised more they’d be able to do even more with the money, including other projects and collaborations with Dan Harmon, Louis C.K. and Robert Smigel.

The Kickstarter campaign video itself attests to just how awesome Anamolisa is going to potentially be.  Check out the time lapse video below of Harry Chaskin and Duke Johnson working on the animation for the Kickstarter video.  This puts things in perspective a bit—if it took this much work to throw together a couple of minutes of animation for the Kickstarter video, just imagine how much work goes into creating a full film!
