If you are like me, and have fond memories of playing Asteroid, Centipede, Missile Command, and more of the Atari classics, then you might be excited to learn that Atari is bringing these games and more to the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad with Atari’s Greatest Hits. This universal app has already been released in the Apple New Zealand App Store, and should be available in the U.S. store any time now.

Included in the collection of “greatest hits” are 18 classic Atari arcade games and 92 Atari 2600 games. The player app is a free download and includes PONG. The greatest hits collection includes 25 separate game packs that cost $0.99 each, or if you wish, you can buy all 100 games for $14.99.

Atari is taking advantage of Apple’s in-app purchasing to sell the game packs. As an example, the Asteroid game pack includes Asteroid, Asteroid Deluxe, Asteroids 2600, and Canyon Bomber, which supports multiple players via Bluetooth. The Bluetooth multiplayer support allows several people to play against each other using their own iOS device.

I am looking forward to installing this app on my iPad and buying some of my favorite games, although I am uncertain about how good the game play will be on a touchscreen. For example, you might recall that the Centipede arcade game had a roller ball to move a gun and a button to fire the gun, and I am not sure how Atari will provide that same type of game play on a touchscreen. Unfortunately, as I write, this Atari’s Greatest Hits is not available in the iTunes App Store in the U.S.
