YouTube Launches Experimental Redesign Called Cosmic Panda

Just days ago Google launched a redesign of their search engine and it looks like YouTube is next on their list.  Earlier today, YouTube announced “a new experimental experience for videos, playlists and channels.”  It’s called Cosmic Panda and there’s no denying the fact that it fits perfectly into the whole Google+, Google redesigned branding experience.

Earlier today, YouTube Product Manager Noam Lovinsky and Software Engineer Alex Ncksay wrote on the YouTube blog, “While you’re watching your favorite or new videos, we at the ‘Tube are obsessing night and day over how those videos are presented.  Our team is constantly experimenting, tweaking and playing with new ways to make your experience exactly what you’re looking for.”  They invite you to take their latest design experiment, Cosmic Panda, for a test drive.  Head over to YouTube.com/CosmicPanda to try it out.

The new video player is a sleek, black player, similar to the one that a number of YouTubers have been noticing in recent weeks.  When the video is left to play, the play bar disappears completely, Vimeo-style.  The YouTube team has used Nyan cat as an example of what the player looks like.  Notice that they have left out the nifty Nyan cat progress bar that shows when the video is played in the non-Cosmic Panda version of YouTube.  But other than that, I think the player looks pretty sweet.

Cosmic Panda also has a new look for playlists, and a new look for channels, as you can see in the RickRoll’d playlist and ICanHasCheezburger.com channel screenshots below.  I think Cosmic Panda may take a little bit of getting used to, but so far I really like how it looks.  Check out Cosmic Panda for yourself and let me know what you think.  Which do you prefer?  Cosmic Panda or the regular old YouTube?
