Revealed: The Cost Of A Professional Web Series [Infographic]

Web video has long been considered a cheaper alternative to television and film, but these days professional web series often look just as good as what you see on TV.  And the cast, crew and equipment used to shoot web series often rivals that of film and television productions.  So how much money goes into producing a series for the web?  To shed some light on this question, YouTuber Freddie Wong’s production company, Rocket Jump, has created an infographic revealing The Cost Of A Webseries.

The infographic breaks down the production costs for Video Game High School, a series Rocket Jump launched earlier this year.  A large portion of the funds for the campaign were raised via Kickstarter, which is why the company decided to reveal the costs that went into producing the feature-length series.  Wong writes that, “Simply put, we cannot expect our fans to support us financially if they have no idea how much things actually cost.”

In the end, the first season of Video Game High School cost Rocket Jump $636,010.71.  Sound expensive?  Wong explains why it’s actually not as much as it seems like:

“While this amount initially seems like a lot of money, the truth is, it’s not.  VGHS was a six-month project with a cast and crew of over 160 people.  We had over six hundred visual effects shots, shot in numerous locations throughout Southern California, and a significant portion of our final two-hour runtime were high production value action scenes.  This was a tremendous undertaking, on par with the scale of commercial Hollywood feature films, and we executed it at a hundredth of the cost.”

You can check out the breakdown in the infographic below, including money spent on everything from cast and crew to food, location fees, equipment, post production and more.  Are you surprised by how much it cost to produce season one of Video Game High School?
