Cox & Fanhattan Test Selling Cable TV to Internet TV Users

Cox Communications is testing a new lower-priced TV and cloud-based video streaming service which targets cord-cutters — people who don’t pay for cable but instead get all of their programming from connected devices.

Variety has the story: “The operator’s flareWatch service is $34.99 per month, with access to 97 live channels and 30 hours of network DVR storage. The service is currently available to Cox broadband subscribers in the Orange County market.”

The Cox Internet TV service makes use of Fanhattan’s Fan TV, a service that lets you watch TV through your phone or iPad. The service includes more than a million shows with content from HBO, FOX, CBS,NBC, ABC, Nickelodeon, as well as YouTube, Amazon, Hulu, and iTunes. Gilles BianRosa, CEO of Fanhattan, provided AppNewser with this statement about the news:

Cox is running a limited trial in Orange County using an early version of Fan TV — focused primarily on live TV and DVR.  As announced in May, Fanhattan plans to work directly with pay TV service providers to distribute Fan TV. Making sure it’s ready for primetime requires rigorous testing, trial customer feedback and constant iteration. This limited trial is a small, early step in that direction.
