There’s sure to be social clashing in Japan as social game makers battle for users. Joining Zynga, Rock You and others is Crowdstar, a company most notable for its flagship title Happy Aquarium. Japanese game studio Drecom will publish Crowdstar’s games in Japan. Not too long ago we covered Zynga’s alliance with SoftBank to publish mobile games in the $2 billion Japanese market. This news follows their recent news regarding their newly formed 5 year relationship with Facebook. Read more after the jump.
Crowdstar is the third-biggest social gaming company on Facebook with over 50 million users. Drecom itself has gathered more than 7 million subscribers since the launch of its first game in August, 2009. Crowdstar had launched its first social gaming in Japan in December and now looks to bring Happy Aquarium to Japan, specifically Mixi, Gree and Hangame, through this lucrative partnership.
Crowdstar’s gained ability to deploy games rapidly in Japan will help its position against Zynga, EA and others. Competition is accelerating fast and CrowdStar is looking to differentiate through improved preferences that come with localization, new game mechanics and better marketing.
The company is part of the YouWeb incubator, headed by Peter Relan who is behind its funding. YouWeb companies also include Sibblingz and OpenFeint. What will be interesting to see is if the dominant Japanese operators release their own virtual currency, an analog of Facebook Credits, in Japan.
