Twitter Thieves “With Too Much Free Time on Their Hands”

Televangelists. Anchormen. Kim Kardashian.

The list of stolen Twitter id’s is growing. The latest is Rep. Don Young who is the one and only U.S. representative from Alaska. Someone’s been Tweeting from @RepDonYoung since Monday.

The 40 updates have been mostly either nonsensical:

Apparently my new assistant is not named Google, or Twitter for that matter. What intersite do I go to for a sandwich?

or juvenile:

Anyone know how to evolve Slowpoke into Slowking in Pokemon Gold? I only can get him to become Slowbro. :-(

but kinda funny:

Me and @PeteHoekstra are leaving now to catch 17 Again at the local cineplex. His choice, not mine. ;-)

But his staff doesn’t like it one bit. After the jump, the email sent from his office…

Nabbr Sets Its Sites on the Under 25

When asked to name the biggest players in online video, most people would rattle off YouTube, Hulu, and Yahoo!. But there’s a new player in the space, especially for younger users: Nabbr.

With this week’s release by comScore of the top video sites in March, Nabbr broke the Top 10, ahead of Disney. And March was the company’s first month providing full data for comScore.

So, what is Nabbr?

Windows 7 Release Candidate Available: No XP Mode for Netbooks But Look for New Mouse Gesture Features

The general public won’t be able to download Windows 7 Release Candidate until May 5. However, if you have a MSDN/Technet subscription or participate in the Microsoft Connect Windows 7 beta testing, you can download it starting today. But, be prepared for a long wait. I started downloading the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the RC as well as both the Windows 7 Server Web and Enterprise Editions over two hours ago. Microsoft File Transfer Manager’s estimated completion time is still swinging wildly between 10 and 26 hours for me. It had been swinging between 6 and 16 hour estimates earlier on. I should note that I have a decent broadband connection.

Windows 7 Release Candidate Is Available From Microsoft (press release)

If you have a netbook, here are a couple of items of interest…

- Microsoft demoed some pretty interesting new mouse gesture features at the Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) Summit that I attended last month in Seattle/Redmond. More on this after I confirm that the RC includes these features.

- Unless you have a Dell mini with the Atom Z530 processor and 2GB RAM, you will NOT be able to test the Windows XP Mode virtualization feature.

- Windows 7 RC does NOT allow upgrading from either Windows XP or Windows 7 Beta. So, if your notebook is currently running either of those OSes (I’m running 7 Beta), backup your netbook now while you are waiting for the RC download to complete (like me). You will have to perform a clean install of Windows 7 RC.

My guess is that I won’t have Windows 7 RC installed on my Asus Eee PC 1000HA until late Friday evening or sometime during the weekend. So, I probably won’t have much in the way of details until next week. But, you can be sure that I’ll have plenty to say (good or bad) about 7 RC on my netbook starting next week Monday. Stay tuned!

Rumors: Cheaper MacBooks in the Queue? Apple Netbook (Newton Redux) Delayed?

My 1st generation Apple MacBook turns three years old in a few weeks and its AppleCare extended warranty (which I just exercised to deal with hairline cracks on the case and got a new heatsink as a bonus) will expire on this anniversary. So, this AppleInsider item got my undivided attention…

Apple to introduce more affordable Macs, sources say

My 3 year old MacBook is surprisingly useful despite its age. I don’t really feel like it is slowing down like a Windows PC does with age. However, as you might expect is battery isn’t able to hold as much of a charge as before (though it still does a good job of it). I could bump up its RAM and hard disk to get more out of the system. But, it would be nice to get a whole new system. So, it would be nice if I could get a new MacBook with, say, 2GB RAM and a 120GB hard drive for $750. Dream on? Maybe. But, Apple’s desktop and notebook market share dropped for the first time in years. And, netbooks are probably eating away at MacBook sales. I know my last three purchases were all netbooks (two Windows XP units and one running Linux).

AppleInsider also notes that while Apple publicly says they reject the notion of the MacBook, they (Apple) have something in the works to combat the netbook phenomenon. This something, however, is not progressing as quickly as expected.

Apple has a long history of denying working on product and dissing current competitive products (remember: “No one wants color LCDs on iPods” or “we aren’t interested in the PDA market”?). So, I’m still fully expecting Apple to launch something that will completely change the way we think of netbooks in the near future.

In the meantime, Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix is here now and is looking very good so far. Windows 7 Release Candidate is available to some people now. And, if it has not slowed down since the Windows 7 Beta release, it will be a real incentive for people to keep on using Windows instead of switching to the Mac (full disclosure: I’m writing this on an iMac :-) .

YouTube Partners With Webby Awards

Webby_4.30.pngThe Webby Awards and YouTube are joining forces for this year’s awards show.

Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers will host the 13th annual awards show on June 8. The next day, the official Webby Awards YouTube Channel will showcase dozens of short video moments from the evening’s festivities, including clips of every winner’s five-word acceptance speech, celebrity interviews from the red carpete, scenes from the 2009 Webby Award-winning videos. The channel will also enable all winners to link directly to and promote their individual 5-word speech video.

WebNewser will be downtown to cover the Webby Awards. So look for coverage here, and on the Webby’s YouTube Channel.

Ruba Turns to Facebook for Travel Recommendations

What happens when trip planning is made social? Ruba is the latest project from serial entrepreneur Mike Cassidy, and it’s taking a very social approach to helping you create the best trip suited to your needs. Ruba, launching today, does this by covering three main aspects of search and discovery. The three main aspects are as follows:

Themes
Visual
Discovery

What this boils down to is a very pictorial way in which to peruse the site and see what’s of interest to you. Ruba starts with the basics, such as Top Hiking Places, or Best Romantic Getaways in Tuscany. This gives you a broad idea of the specific type of content a user is after, as opposed to merely starting out a search based on geography.

Disney to Acquire 30% of Hulu

Hulu_4.30.jpgBreaking: WSJ.com reports Disney is acquiring 30% of video site Hulu.com.

Under the terms of the deal Disney will invest a similar amount of capital and marketing funds as founding partners NBC Universal and News Corp.

ABC_4.30.jpgFull ABC shows are expected to be added to the current Hulu roster soon.

This leaves CBS as the only major television broadcaster not a part of Hulu. CBS Corp. owns the TV.com video site, which aggregates many CBS shows and those of other producers and networks. In February, Hulu.com pulled its content from TV.com.

Launched in March ’08, Hulu surpassed Yahoo last month as the number-three video service on the Web serving up 380 million videos. YouTube continues to dominate the online video market. MySpace is second.

Ashton Kutcher’s ‘Twitter Guys’ Profile Actually About Ashton Kutcher

Ashton-Kutcher.jpgIn the latest issue of Time, Ashton Kutcher — he of the one million Twitter followers — profiles The Twitter Guys, who made the magazine’s Time 100 list.

The “profile” contains four paragraphs: one that mentions founders Biz Stone, Evan Williams, and Jack Dorsey, one that describes the microblogging service, and two about how Kutcher uses Twitter.

Perhaps this shouldn’t be a surprise.

Aji Reader Lets You Read PDF Documents on Your iPhone or iPod touch

Aji Reader PDF 1.0

…is a 99 cent iPhone app that lets you view Adobe Acrobat PDF documents on an iPhone or iPod touch. You can see the GreyStripe report that I discussed yesterday in the screenshot above.

ajireader_2.png

I ran into some rendering speed issues while viewing the GreyStripe and other sample PDF documents in Aji Reader. I sent Aji a note about this. They say that they heard similar reports but that this is not the norm. I’m going to send them some information to see if they can figure out why I have this speed issue. You can see in the screenshot above that my screen blanks out long enough for me to take screenshot while scrolling through a PDF document.

ajireader_4.png

PDF files can be downloaded directly from the web using Aji Reader’s web browser component. However, this can be a hassle since you have to type in the exact URL string. Using a URL shortener like is.gd can make this a much less annoying task. However, the simplest way to bring PDF files into the iPhone or iPod touch is to download the free Aji Reader Service app to your desktop and have it sync with Aji Reader on the iPhone. Aji provides Aji Reader Service software that runs on either Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X. I tried the Mac OS X version. You can see its app window in the screenshot above. The download files can be found linked at…

Aji Reader

99 cents seems like a reasonable price for a handy utility (and free desktop component) if you need to review PDF documents on your iPhone.
