Pirate Bay Co-Creator Working on Messaging App To Dodge Government Surveillance

Peter Sunde, one of founders of the file sharing site The Pirate Bay, is helping build a messaging platform called Heml.is to circumnavigate government surveillance. The outline the new app in the video embedded above–what do you think?

The application will be free, but users can pay to unlock certain features at a later date. While they are still building the tool, they promise to release both an iOS and a Google Play edition of the app. Check it out:

As part of the ongoing mass surveillance, internet traffic is currently being stored and indexed in massive databases, allowing the data to be analyzed, searched and ultimately read at a later time. This affects everything we do online, from emails to search statistics and even our daily activities on social sites such as Facebook or Twitter. While we won’t be able to provide you with 100% privacy, we believe that we can make your conversations private enough to render mass surveillance ineffective. While most people seem to be concerned about the government reading the contents of private communications very few seem concerned about their ability to build sociograms. Our intent is that by encrypting and then tunneling all messages through the Hemlis network we are making it more difficult for them to data mine or build sociograms from your communications. The surveillance systems can see that you are using Hemlis but they can’t see what takes place inside the network.

3DHubs Creates A Community for Sharing and Borrowing 3D Printers

3a

Maybe you live in a tiny closet and 3D printers won’t fit. Or maybe you can’t sacrifice your lattes for the investment in a personal printer. All of these scenarios lead us to one conclusion. Now that we are all sharing houses, cars, bike, and airplanes, shouldn’t we be sharing our 3D printers as well?

It was just a matter of time, but 3DHubs does just that. It works just like any other web-sharing service, but you don’t have to do any work. Just send over a 3D file for printing and the “hub” will do the rest. If you own a 3D printer, you can sign up to be a “hub.”

Smashwords Partners With Flipkart, “The Amazon of India”

Feat

Self-publishing platform Smashwords has formed a distribution alliance with Flipkart, India’s largest online bookseller. Flipkart counts about 9.6 million customers, including 1 million daily visitors. In addition, India is the fifth highest source of traffic for Smashwords after the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

Here is more from the Smashwords blog: “Flipkart representatives point to Nielsen BookScan Retail Panel data, which states that Flipkart holds 80% market share for online book sales in India and holds 40-45% market share for all trade book sales across physical stores and online.  Smashwords titles will begin appearing at Flipkart.com in the next 3-4 weeks…Flipkart is commonly referred to as the Amazon of India.  To be fair to Flipkart, Amazon would probably kill to become the Flipkart of India some day.”

Indian consumers can purchase eBooks through Flipkart’s website as well as through from their Android and Microsoft Windows 8.  The Flipkart app supports reading only.

Bang With Friends Has Returned to the App Store

a

The controversial app Bang With Friends, which lets Facebook users find out which of their friends are interested in having sex with them, has returned to Apple’a App Store under a new name.

The new app is called Down. It’s basically like the old app, a way to find out which Facebook friends are down to hook up, but it’s a little more subtle this time around. Users must give the app permission to access their Facebook friends. Once they are logged in, they can indicate which Facebook friends they’d be “down” with and when both friends have selected the other, both will get a message.

The original Bang with Friends app was removed from the App Store back in May. Apple did not explain why, but Apple has been known to have strict policies against content that is at all pornographic. There was also a privacy loophole as Facebook users could check out which of their friends had installed the app. The new app promises to be completely private, but we shall wait and see.
