I’m not jet-setting frequent flier these days (been there, done that, not fun, IMHO). So, I’ve never even been on a plane with in-flight WiFi in my infrequent trips over the past couple of years (perhaps 2 or 3 long flights per year). But, if you are, Dvice.com’s article…
Airline Wi-Fi: All U.S. services compared
…is for you. It provides a handhy table listing the three in-flight WiFi providers for eight airlines flying in the U.S.: LiveTV, Row 44, and Aircell Gogo. The airlines are: JetBlue, Southwest, Alaska Airlines, AirTrain, Delta, American, Virgin, and US Airways.
LiveTV is the cheapest (free) but is only available on one JetBlue aircraft. Gogo is reasonably priced ($9.95 for flights less than 3 hours and $12.95 for flights longer than 3 hours). Both LiveTV and Gogo use air-to-ground technology. So, if you are on a trans-oceanic flight, you are out of service. Row 44 uses Satellite technology. But, prices vary. And, I’m guessing there is more that a little latency (delay) involved. BTW & FYI: VoIP calls are banned on all three services. So, no air-Skype for you!
