In a new competition series by the creators of “Survivor” and the “Amazing Race,” actor and WWE World Champion Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a “The Rock”) will make heroes of ordinary people through feats of strength, tests of courage, and the power of social media.
In “The Hero,” three teams of contestants on different continents will have to complete challenges under adverse circumstances. To win, they’ll have to display the same quick-thinking that made Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger a hero when he safely landed a plane in the Hudson River after a flock of geese disabled his engine.
“While Dwayne’s physical stature is unmatched, it is his uncompromising moral character and humanity that proves what an inspirational hero he is, ” said Ben Silverman, founder and chairman of Electus, the show’s distributor, in a statement.
“Excited to partner up w/ Ben Silverman for our new show THE HERO,” wrote Johnson from his @TheRock Twitter handle. “Inspired to find real life #Heros.”
Johnson, who was named in the fifth annual Mashable Awards as a “Must-Follow Actor or Actress on Social Media” of 2011, will leverage his 9.1 million-plus Facebook, Twitter and YouTube fans to incorporate social media into every aspect of the show. This includes pre-production, casting, and on-location shooting as well as audience participation during the live broadcast.
“‘The Hero’ will bridge the digital and physical world on the small screen in an unmatched fashion, enabling fans to determine the fate of the show’s contestants entirely through social media and on-screen decision making,” said Johnson. The star averages 28,000 new followers and fans per day on both Twitter and Facebook, and his followers reteweet 11 percent of his posts.
The high stakes global adventure premieres this week at the the NAB Show in Las Vegas.
