Facebook and YouTube Prove To Be Fastest, Most Reliable Social Networks

Once again, Facebook rules as the fastest social network for the fifth straight quarter in a row, according to Web Performance Index for Social Networks. In the first quarter of 2011, the site increased its speed from 1.06 seconds in the fourth quarter 2010 to an incredible 0.75 seconds. The benchmark average response time reports at 2.42 seconds. Obviously, Facebook is jamming!

YouTube retained the title it earned last quarter as the most reliable social network, delivering 99.96 percent availability. However, it was just slightly lower than its October – December performance. Furthermore, it placed second in the speed category, with a 1.46 second average response time, almost one second lower than the industry average, but above the benchmark reliable average of 99.77 percent.

LinkedIn and Facebook took silver and bronze in site reliability this quarter, serving up 99.91 percent and 99.88 percent availability.

Twitter received an honorable mention even though it fell below average in both performance categories this quarter. The quarterly index reports that “Twitter has demonstrated consistency in speed and reliability over the past year, even as its membership and tweet count have grown exponentially.”

The Web Performance Index shows leniency for there have been bumps (remember the 2010 World Cup or 2010 Haitian earthquake), but for the most part, response times have remained in the two second range, even dropping a fraction of a second this quarter to 2.59. Like its cousins, Twitter’s availability has remained above 99 percent.
