Facebook Introduces Verified Pages and Profiles

File under “can’t believe it didn’t happen sooner“: Facebook launched verified pages and profiles for public figures today.

“Verified Pages belong to a small group of prominent public figures (celebrities, journalists, government officials, popular brands and businesses) with large audiences,” Facebook said.

Some Pages are already verified. User profiles will see the feature soon, the company said.

Facebook will adopt a small blue icon with a check mark inside it, similar to the one pioneered by Twitter, to designate Verified Pages. The icon will appear beside the account holder’s name on timelines and in search results, as well as on his or her Page or Timeline.

Like Twitter, Facebook will decide whose accounts are worthy of verification. Users cannot request to have their account verified, the company said.

According to Inside Facebook, Facebook is likely “preparing for another push to get celebrities on the platform by expanding its strategic partner development team to build relationships with athletes, musicians and other entertainers.”
