Facebook Invites Participants for Third Annual Hacker Cup

social networks, social media, facebookEven as a public company, Facebook will invite legions of hackers to come help it build new products at its third annual Hacker Cup, where the reward for the top hack is has doubled to $10,000.

The company frequently touts its so-called “hacker’s way” of tackling problems. The theme became the basis of Mark Zuckerberg’s letter about the company in the paperwork it filed seeking to go public.

“Hacking is core to how we build at Facebook. Whether we’re building a prototype for a major product like Timeline at a Hackathon, creating a smarter search algorithm, or tearing down walls at our new headquarters, we’re always hacking to find better ways to solve problems,” Facebook says on the Hacker Cup page.

The competition features four online “rounds” in consecutive weekends beginning Jan 25. The finals take place March 22 and 23 at Facebook’s Palo Alto, California, headquarters.

Participants will be presented with algorithmic problems. The accuracy and speed of their solutions determine whether they qualify for subsequent rounds.

In addition to the bigger purse of this year’s competition, hacker’s will compete for “fame, fortune, glory and a shot at the title of world champion,” according to Facebook.
