Facebook Stomps the Competition as a Driver of Referral Traffic

Despite the panic over Facebook’s supposed impending demise and the decline in organic reach, the social network still drives the most traffic of all the top social networks.

According to the Q2 Shareaholic Social Media Report, Facebook drives nearly 25 percent of all social referrals. In fact, Facebook referrals have increased steadily over the last two quarters, more than 40 percent in Q1 and another 10 percent in Q2.

This dominance in Facebook referral traffic is not without consequences for other networks. Pinterest, which Shareaholic referred to as the queen of social referrals, saw its share of referral traffic decline nearly 20 percent. Still, the “visual search engine” maintained it’s second place position.

Referral traffic from the other top networks — Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, Reddit and YouTube — all dropped less than a percentage point.

To put this into even broader perspective, Facebook referral traffic is up 150 percent YoY and Pinterest referrals are up almost 70 percent. Indeed, this data proves that Facebook continues to maintain value as a driver of traffic across the Web.
