Last night was the first time that a film shot using an iPhone won an Oscar. Searching for Sugarman, the documentary about the bizarre fate of Detroit singer-songwriter Rodriguez, won the best documentary Oscar at Sunday’s ceremony. The film was partially shot with the iPhone Super 8 app.

So it was an appropriate event for Apple to show off the latest commercial for the iPad. The ad, which we have embedded above, highlights the device’s tools for both creating and viewing movies.

TUAW has more: “It’s not the first time Apple has made an appearance at the Oscars. Apple’s showings at the awards show stretch all the way back 2007, when the first Apple iPhone commercial made its debut.”

Maybe next year there will be a movie shot on an iPad up for an award.
