Foursquare has added a link button to its Web service that allows members to share a link to venue pages with non-members.
The button was rolled out in mobile apps earlier this month. The feature generates a URL which doesn’t require login to access.
The addition moves Foursquare significantly in the direction of becoming an open ratings and local search platform. Venue pages are rich with data shared among Foursquare members, including tips, ratings and photos.
The cost of moving to an open platform is that Foursquare would lose the location data it derives from check-ins, of which the company claims to have generated 3 billion.
