Game Consoles Connect Half of Netflix Users to Streaming Video

Streaming video online is growing and expanding in all sectors of entertainment in the U.S. The way in which viewers tune in varies quite a bit across all services. However, Nielsen did a survey and discovered that a good majority of Netflix users report watching on a TV screen. As a matter of fact, half of all Netflix users connect via a game console, such as Wii, PS3 or Xbox Live.

Streaming video through a game console makes sense because the game systems are so versatile and user friendly. Still, forty-two percent of the Netflix users report watching video stream on their computers.

On the other hand, Hulu users predominantly watch on their computers with Nielsen’s survey reporting 89 percent of Hulu users watch directly on computer.

In a more standard way but not as popular, one-fifth of Hulu users and 14 percent of Netflix users reported that they stream by connecting their computer to the TV. Some over-the-top, internet-enabled devices, such as Roku Box, Google TV and Apple TV, were acknowledge as other means for connecting with Hulu and Netflix.

Nielsen conducted the survey on more than 12,000 online interviews in March 2011. The interviews focused on usage and attitudes for over-the-top video, focusing on Netflix and Hulu.
