George Bush's Facebook Profile PictureDo you want to be George W. Bush’s friend? The 43rd President of the United States is now officially on Facebook, and while he has a page rather than a profile (so you can only “like” him rather than “friend” him), he has amassed over 80,000 fans since signing up yesterday morning. The Facebook page has only two wall posts as of today, but well over 5,000 comments between them.

The two wall posts pertain to Bush’s speaking and traveling engagements post-Presidency, as well as Laura Bush’s recently released memoir. He also lists several quick links to institutions and organizations that he is part of and some of his favorite pages. The only application on the page is the “Causes” application linking to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, for which Bush has recruited 4 people and raised $10 dollars thus far.

So what’s the general atmosphere over at the page? Despite what some might think, it’s overwhelmingly positive. Messages of thanks peppered with pleas to come back to office make up the majority of the comments, while negative comments are few and far between. And, since it is the web after all, you even get gems like a recent comment offering an invitation to the commenter’s wedding (of course, they would also accept cash in lieu of the former President’s presence). Maybe all of the truly negative comments are scared away by the fact that the commenter would have to publicly “like” Bush before being able to leave a comment.

More politicians and former politicians are hopping on the social media bandwagon than ever. And while this page is likely run by an assistant rather than the former President himself, it follows the trend of politics going social. Issues like censoring comments, misuses of Twitter, and embarrassing tagged photos will still plague net-savvy politicians for some time, but it’s clear that our leaders and former leaders see the value in an online presence.
