New companies are springing up that send targeted text messages to cellphone users. Here’s how they work: you sign up on a mailing list for whatever topic you’re interested in, such as local concerts, sports, or fashion news. Then you receive messages several times a week (maybe more, maybe less) about that topic.
80108 Media is the latest entry into this field. They’re starting in the Boston area — we saw about two dozen cities listed, but the others had few options available — and they’re hiring “mobile correspondents” to follow each of the available topics.
In the beginning, there won’t be any advertising, since 80108 Media is looking to “build their subscriber base,” according to the Mediaweek report.
